Ron Paul is Coming to Seattle

Libertarian-minded Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul will visit Seattle on Thursday, packing in three quick events on turf where GOP hopefuls rarely tread these days.

Paul, a Texas congressman, will deliver a noon hour speech on his Economic Plan to "local business and financial leaders" at Lake Union Crew, 11 E. Allison Street.

The GOP hopeful will open the Washington State Ron Paul Headquarters, at 4341 1/2 University Way, between 1:15 and 1:45 p.m..

Paul has then scheduled a "Soup With Students" event from 2 to 3 p.m., at the University of Washington's Husky Union Building.

The Texas congressman flies out for a late afternoon event in Spokane, and then heads for Grand Junction, Colorado.

Colorado holds its presidential caucuses on Feb. 5. Washington follows four days later on Feb. 9th.

Aside from Sen. John McCain, Republican presidential candidates have steered clear of Democratic-leaning Seattle in recent years. They have usually made public appearances in Bellevue, or in political "swing" areas like Snohomish County. Billionaires' lawns and military bases have been the preferred venue for President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

But Paul has been the lone GOP candidate to oppose the war in Iraq, and to argue for a scaleback of U.S. military commitments overseas. He is also a critic of the U.S.A. Patriot Act.

hey guys, i spoke to vijay about this a few days ago, and today he told me not to waste the trip up, because ron paul is only stopping into the seattle HQ for 20 minutes or so. if you want to make the trip, you're welcome to, but don't expect much.

Bummer. That's a tough drive for 20 minutes. If anyone else decides to go let me know and maybe I can hand off my poster to see if you can't get it signed?
